6 Vegetables that Regrow without a Garden

Like many other people I have noticed the continuous increase in food prices. One way to save some money on your groceries is to take advantage of the produce that can regrow! Some veggies are very easy while others may take more commitment. Consider this a little science experiment that will only take a few minutes of your time. No need for a garden or a grocery store when you can do this year round by a window.

Try to regrow some of the vegetables below by taking these steps:

1. Scallions (Green Onions)

  • When copping your scallions leave an inch of green with the roots of your scallion (green onion)
  • Place the roots in a small glass of water and place them in a well lit room

2. Bok Choy

  • Bok Choy can by regrown by placing the root end in water in a well lit room
  • In 1-2 weeks you will see roots and can transplant it to a pot with soil
  • This will continue to grow as you cut from it

3. Carrot Tops

  • Place the tops of carrots into a dish with a little water in a well lit room
  • The green tops of the carrots will regrow and are great for salads

4. Basil

  • Place clippings of basil in 3-4 inches of water, roots will grow from the stems of the basil.
  • When you see the roots are 1 inch long you can transplant the basil into soil and it will continue to grow
  • This will grow the more you use it. Make sure your clippings are placed in direct sun

5. Celery

  • Cut off the base of celery and place it in shallow warm water and place your dish in direct sun
  • You will see green leaves sprout from the center of the base. Once you see leaves growing transplant in soil.
  • You can repeat this process over and over.

6. Romaine lettuce

  • Place the stumps of romaine lettuce in ½ inch of water.
  • After a few days you will see roots and new leaves growing.
  • Once you see new growth transplant into soil.
